Yes, but....

What other solution do you see?

Is it possible do it like this...
.../simplecal/01-eventname-1
.../simplecal/01-eventname-2
.../simplecal/01-eventname-3

this would look cleaner to me.

Doesn't work, sorry.
Think about this situation: we have an alias like "class-of-97". Following your reasoning, the copied item should have "class-of-97-1", right? But how can I know that? For a machine, this should be "class-of-98"...
I think it's too much work involved to actually check if the last digits are an enumerator or just part of the event name.
Remember: you can always change your alias after the copy (right away), so chaining of "copy-of-" won't be an issue.

Thanks for the idea.
